A New Orleans Police Department officer died after being shot while on patrol early Friday in New Orleans East, according to authorities.
When the victim got out of his auto, the perpetrator fired on him and the officer returned fire, according to FOX 8. Michael Harrison said the officer was shot multiple times.
The shooting occurred just before 12:30 a.m., as the officer exchanged gunfire with a suspect at Cindy Place Apartments. The officer was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was on the scene and asked for prayers for the officer. Harrison says the suspect later surrendered peacefully and is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds at UMC.
"This hurts, I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", Harrison said.
The suspect fled to a nearby building.
Harrison said two officers might have fired on the gunman.
The police chief said grief counselors are on the scene. The name of the fallen officer is not being released until the notification process for the whole family is complete, said Landrieu.
