Iran on Tuesday caused the biggest upset yet in the Federation Internationale de Football Association U-17 World Cup in Margao in Goa, by beating Germany 4-0, thereby qualifying for the knockout round.
Younes Delfi opened the scoring for the Iranian team in the 6th minute and extended Iran's lead in the 42nd minute.
Germany will thank their goalkeeper Luca Plogmann for helping them avert further embarrassment with several important saves as Delfi and Allayahr Sayyad ran their defence ragged. They thoroughly outclassed Germany and by doing so, sent a message to other teams in the competition. The Christian Wueck-coached side needs a win to secure an automatic spot in the Round of 16 as one of the two group toppers. "Germany is always a tough opponent for any team in the world but we showed a brilliant team performance; we defended excellently and were great in attack", Iran's head coach Abbas Chamanian said. As for Guinea, they need a win to entertain any hopes of qualification after the loss against Iran and the draw against Costa Rica. Thanks to the Portuguese connection, they are sure to get strong crowd support and will be looking to take advantage of it. Debutant Niger, on the other hand, had a dream start to the tournament when they won their opening encounter against North Korea but lost the next game to Spain.
The Iranian team has previously defeated Guinea 3-1 in their opening match.
"We respected the German team and we did not underestimate them".
DPR Korea frustrated Brazil by sitting deep and relying on counter-attacks in their previous match and Spain will expect a similar experience in a must-win match for the La Rojitas.
Day five of FIFA Under-17 World Cup brings to us the action from Group C and D. In Group C Costa Rica will take on Guinea and Iran will face Germany.
