"There's Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts", Kevin Stewart said. The organization says for years it has gotten requests from families and from girls looking to join the program.
Under the new plan, Cub Scout dens will be either all-boys or all-girls.
Girls will be able to join the Boy Scouts staring in 2018.
The Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday that girls will be allowed in and given the opportunity to become Eagle Scouts. Larger Cub Scout packs will be able to decide whether or not they want to go co-ed. "Like when I'm around girls, I can really open up and we have similarities so we can have a discussion and talk about it" says Girl Scout, Amari Johnson.
"So I get how parents would say how or why can't my girl join?"
"There's not a lot of modifications in the program we expect to make but this is in a little bit of a pilot stage program at this point", Harding says.
"There has to be a female adult leader there if there are girls, so there's always someone comfortable to speak to", said Vitela.
The Girl Scouts of the U.S. is reportedly meh on the news and has pointed to research showing that many girls learn best in an all-female environment.
"Parents just have limited time, and if we can provide a program for the kids where they can take their entire family, it's better for the family", said Steven Smith, Scout Executive/CEO of the Connecticut Rivers Council, which brings scouting programs to local children. "We're here to serve girls in an all-girl environment", said Lynelle McKay, CEO of Girl Scouts of Central Texas.
She is now a Line Leader for the Cub Scouts. "Girls in an all girl environment and an environment that's girl-led will allow them to participate more, engage more, and learn more than if it were in a co-ed environment", said Wharton. "We stand for girls and we're Girl Scout strong".
Scouts organisations in Canada (since 1998) and the United Kingdom (since 1976 for ages 15 to 20 then from 2007 for all ages) are already co-ed too.
"She loves outdoors and she was jealous when I went to summer camp and all the stuff that I learned", he said.

Walter is excited that starting next year, families can choose to sign up their sons and daughters for Cub Scouts.
