"Iran has unveiled a new ballistic missile with range of 2,000 km", Armen Israelyan, Yerevan-based expert on Iranian studies, said in a Facebook post, adding the unveiling came during a military parade in Tehran following President Hassan Rouhani's return from NY.

Thousands in the Iranian capital got a glimpse of the new Khorramshahr missile, which Tehran says is capable of carrying nuclear warheads more than 1,200 miles.

To mark what is known as the Sacred Defence Week in Iran, the country kicked started massive military parades across the country on Friday, as a show of strength.

Iran's army, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) and the volunteer militia Basij forces participated in the parade, which is annually held to remember the 1980-1988 war between Iraq and Iran.

The latest military and defense achievements and missiles manufactured by Iranian experts were put on display at the parades. "We will promote our defensive and military power as much as we deem necessary".

At the event, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed that the country's military power has been used only in acts of defense, despite what he called the export of deadly weapons by foreign powers to the Middle East. "It is capable of carrying more than one warhead".

"Whether you like it or not we are going to help Syria, Yemen and Palestine, and we will strengthen our missiles", he added.

The U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers, and commented that Iran's continuing missile program has violated the spirit of the deal.
