According to TMZ, Casey died on Wednesday (Sept. 20) while surrounded by family, per his press rep. He was 78 years old.
He had a record-breaking track and field career specialising in the in the high-hurdles for Bowling Green State University, earning All-America recognition and a trip to the finals at the 1960 United States Olympic Trials.
"He also starred in the Keenan Ivory Wayans" I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, an action comedy parody film of blaxploitation, where he appeared as a version of himself alongside other football players-turned-actors. "He then acted alongside fellow former National Football League star Jim Brown in the crime dramas "...tick...tick...tick..." and "Black Gunn".
However, he was known more for his acting, including movie roles in "Revenge of the Nerds" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka". Casey then followed it with Martin Scorcese's Boxcar Bertha and other roles throughout the decade, but was likely more memorable to most audiences thanks to his roles in the '80s.
He then played Central Intelligence Agency agent Felix Leiter in Never Say Never Again in 1983, followed by an iconic portrayal of U.N. Jefferson in Revenge of the Nerds in 1984. In 1990, he made a splash as a prisoner who protects Eddie Murphy in Another 48 Hrs.
His prolific acting career also included films such as "Revenge of the Nerds", "Black Chariot", "The Man Who Fell to Earth", "In the Mouth of Madness", "The Glass Shield", "Mr. Hyde", "Once Upon a Time ..." When We Were Colored (1995), and Dinner (1997).
A true Renaissance man, Casey also was a published poet as well as a painter whose work was exhibited in galleries around the world. Casey received an honorary doctorate degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
