Nike's 'NBA Connected' jerseys tap into the game with NFC tags

Nike releases all new NBA 'statement edition' alternate jerseys at media event

Utah Jazz unveil new gold 'Statement' jersey

Although first looks at individual team jerseys have been revealed since July, Nike and the National Basketball Association officially unveiled the jersey on Friday night (Sept. 15), introducing new innovations and a new look. It's not yet clear how often teams will wear these new uniforms, but hopefully it's a lot because they sure are pretty sharp. On Friday night, Nike revealed all of them in one big show.

As many would have expected, the Lakers jersey did not see much of a change. Like the other two new uniforms, this one has a "5 For The Fight" patch on the top right corner. The trim of the jersey is also navy. Here's how Nike describers it in their press release. To unlock it all, fans will download the NikeConnect app and tap the jersey with their smartphone.

For most fans the experience of wearing team apparel on gameday (whether they're in the stadium or at home) is enough to make them feel plugged in, but this is an attempt to take things a step further. On that app, which will be available to owners of an iPhone 7 or an Android device with NFC capability, fans will be able to watch highlights of the player whose jersey they own as well as receive shoe deals. Another fourth uniform is expected to be unveiled before the new season begins.
