Her role in Netflix's "The Crown" landed her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and she's also the lead opposite Andrew Garfield in Andy Serkis' directorial debut "Breathe", in theaters this October.
Claire Foy is confirmed to be playing Lisbeth Salander in Sony Pictures' upcoming adaptation of The Girl in the Spider's Web. The Golden Globe-winner star of The Crown succeeds Noomi Rapace and Rooney Mara in the role of Lisbeth in the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. That proved a box office coup for the studio, pulling in a total of $232.6 million worldwide. The director of the film will be Fede Alvarez, who is coming off of the unexpectedly successful Don't Breathe and the intense remake of Evil Dead. Furthermore, the sequel/reboot will feature an entirely different cast.
Indeed David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of Dragon Tattoo was meant to kick off a franchise with Rooney Mara in the Salander role, and he even set screenwriter Steven Zaillian to pen the sequels.
It's official: Claire Foy is the new Lisbeth Salander. Production is set to begin in January in Berlin and Stockholm with a release date of October 19, 2018. "I can't wait to bring this new story to a worldwide audience, with Claire Foy at its center", said Alvarez when Sony made the announcement this morning.
Still, Foy did say that preparing for a role like Lisbeth Salander would probably require getting "lots of tattoos" and, you know, "being buff". Then, Craig will soon dive into his final go-around as James Bond in Bond 25 and Mara has no shortage of films on her plate. Unlike the Fincher/Rooney film, the novel had not been previously adapted in Swedish.
