Real Madrid full-back Marcelo has agreed a new five-year contract, the club have announced.

Real Madrid have the option of appealing against the decision, Marca reports, but it would seem pointless at this stage and the Spanish giants may as well just accept the punishment dealt out to their left-back. It hurts to see Real Madrid, in three games, picking up the same number of sendings off as Barcelona in more than two seasons", he said, adding, "The stats are there, and objective, and speak for themselves.

He found the back of the net a career-high five times during the 2010-11 campaign and has scored at least one goal in every season since his first year with the club.

The Brazil global received a two-match suspension following a red card for a hard foul at the end of the league game against Levante on Saturday.

Marcelo, 29, has won 17 major trophies since joining Madrid from Fluminense in 2007, including four LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues.

Los Blancos attempted to appeal against the ban, but a Spanish Football Federation committee chose to throw out their argument and have upheld the suspension. Marcelo was hit with the card after kicking out at Levante midfielder Lerma while the two were tussling on the ground.

Real Madrid can appeal Marcelo's ban within a period of 10 days.

He was sent off in Real's 1-1 draw at home to Levante.
