How you can help animals impacted by Hurricane Harvey

Not Released

More than a dozen dogs and cats from rain-tossed Houston were flown to a North Jersey animal shelter

As people are deciding whether to comply with evacuation orders, their pets end up being part of the decision.

Ringwood-based Southern Paws is a rescue group that specializes in transporting animals north from southern states where there is a higher rate of euthanization of shelter pets. "These dogs are going to make unbelievable pets to the people of New Jersey, they just wanted snuggles and treats".

Miller said the dogs will first rest for meals and walks.

"They contacted us and asked if we could take a whole planeload, we reached out to our partners, they said immediately 'yes.' In fact, so many groups have now responded that we may not have that many up for adoption from our program", Cammisa said.

Maura Davies, vice president of communications, said they've also been getting donations of supplies and money.

She said when rescuers come to help stranded people, they usually will take families' pets out too - though she said she was hearing reports of differing policies.

Thousands have been rescued since Hurricane Harvey unleashed havoc across south east Texas - including pets. Similar stories are being seen across the area, showing the rescue, love, and bond between eople and pets.

"Today's group of dogs went to the East Coast, and tomorrow we're going West Coast, to OR and Washington", Jarl said, adding that they are committed to "transporting up to 1,000 dogs, that need to get out of Texas as soon as possible".

After dozens of people and their pets were barred from entering Houston's main emergency shelter, the George R. Brown Convention Center, city and county officials reversed course. Rescue Village's partner shelters are working to prepare animals for transport and are unsure how long it will take them to arrive. They housed 179 dogs, 51 cats and one gerbil named Rufus.

The OHS team will work hand-in-hand with the Houston SPCA, and will provide assistance in caring for animals at a facility located in the Houston area. "So that they can make room for animals that will go over to Hilton Head this week".
