Per Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports, the football team has suspended seven players for the upcoming game, including receiver Antonio Callaway.
The other players suspended include offensive linemen Kadeem Telfort and Richerd Desir-Jones, linebackers James Houston and Ventrell Miller, and defensive linemen Jordan Smith and Keivonnis Davis. Action has been taken - they have missed some practice and will miss the MI game.
"We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward", the coach said.
The specific nature of those "choices" was not disclosed.
It's unclear at this point why the seven players were suspended, but Callaway went unpunished in May following a police citation for marijuana possession.
Callaway, a junior from Miami, led the Gators last season with 721 yards.
While Davis was expected to make an impact along the defensive line, Callaway is easily the biggest name on the list. In addition, he scored a rushing touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score.
In the last meeting between the two teams, a 41-7 MI win in the 2016 Citrus Bowl, Callaway caught five passes for 75 yards. He had 27 tackles, 1½ sacks and a forced fumble in 2016. He tallied a season-high five tackles against Alabama in the SEC championship game and forced a fumble against Iowa in the Outback Bowl.
The Wolverines and Gators are set to meet September 2 at AT&T Stadium in the 2017 Advocare Classic.
