Zverev downs fellow young gun in Montreal semi-final

Federer comes through Ferrer test to reach the last eight at the Rogers Cup

Bautista Agut in marathon win over Monfils at Rogers Cup; Schwartzman advances

Bautista Agut advanced to a quarter-final against the victor of a match later Thursday between second-seeded Roger Federer and David Ferrer. In the final, Federer topped Croatian Marin Cilic in straight sets (6-3, 6-1, 6-4) in a one-sided, 101-minute match, earning his first Grand Slam title on grass courts since 2012.

World No.3 Federer secured the decisive first break against Bautista Agut in the ninth game of the opening set and then served out to take control of the match.

The 30-year-old Haase said he always believed he could be competitive at this level, but he had to overcome a serious knee injury early in his career.

Roger Federer continued his march towards a third Rogers Cup triumph with a straight-sets win over Roberto Bautista Agut on Friday. "Both things combined, two major factors in a beginning of a match, I was able to get into the match better".

"I'm happy I'm playing as well as I am this year on the match courts. Plus I feel comfortable at the net so why not spend some time up there instead of slugging it out from the baseline?"

Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman posted a unusual win over American Jared Donaldson 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 to advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Robin Haase, the 52nd-ranked Dutchman who upset seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1.

Other quarter-finals later Friday have Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., against Adrian Mannarino of France and fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany against South African Kevin Anderson.

Federer is seeking his 27th Masters 1000 title and his third Canadian Masters crown after wins in 2004 and 2006.

"I mean, I go from being not known to being so known in the tennis world, in Canada in general".

Roger Federer has vowed to showcase an aggressive brand of tennis as he aims to win the Montreal Masters and continue his incredible year. "I also told him that this is just the first match of very, very many that we will play against him".

"I told him he had a great run, well done to him, to not worry too much that he lost today", said Zverev. Just to get back to number one once again in your career is a big deal, especially later in your life. I think my concentration and just my playing has gone up a notch.

"I hope it gives me a lot of confidence", Haase said of his performance for the week. It drains you because you know you can do better.
