J&K: Gun battle underway between security forces, terrorists in Shopian

On Friday, villagers poured out of their homes and pelted stones after security forces cordoned off the village of Zakir Musa, the chief of Jammu and Kashmir's Al Qaeda affiliate, officials said.

The army in collaboration with the para commandos was carrying out the operation in Kupwara, comprising forested areas of Kunnad, Kani Behak, Batpora Haihama, Manigah and Chat.

An army man was killed and four others suffered injuries in the gunfight between militants and government forces in Awneera village of Shopian district on Saturday, police sources said.

Heavy fire is being exchanged between the security forces and the terrorists.

The encounter is going on in Bagdad area of Awneera village. The report further added that after receiving the information, 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), special operations group and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were immediately deployed in the area to gun down the terrorists.

In the ensuing encounter, five soldiers were injured and were evacuated to the 92 Base Hospital of the Army where two among them succumbed to their injuries.

The police have refuted that any mosque was damaged in the encounter. However, there was no report of casualty.
