As thousands of Disney fans packed the exhibition hall at the Anaheim Convention Centre on the weekend, they were treated to a passing parade of Jedi knights, superheroes, teasers and tidbits from upcoming blockbusters. The Disney-centric event that only comes around once every two years is here. Mary Poppins Returns will be released in cinemas for Christmas 2018.
Earlier this year, we got our first look at images from the movie...
Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel to the 1964 classic film Mary Poppins which was then helmed by Julie Andrews. The all-new sequel to the 1964 Mary Poppins, which was part of the Expo's live-action presentation slate, features a fresh sensibility while celebrating the spirit of the original. She's just unbelievable. There will never be anyone else like her.
"We both and the entire company and the creative time feel very protective of the original film because we love it so much", Marshall said. Mary Poppins also introduces the children to a new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, including her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep).
Emily Blunt stars as Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns. And we will see Mary Poppins return to the now grownup Jane Banks, Michael Banks, and his three children after they suffer a personal loss.
Director Rob Marshall admitted, "It's a dream cast", Marshall said. Blunt looks happy to be playing the iconic character, and is sure to give an incredible performance in the sequel. "This is a brand-new original film musical from top to bottom, which is very rare, and it is a wonderful opportunity to create something specifically for the screen". The bi-annual expo, which has celebrated all of their many fans, serves as a great way for the Mouse House to showcase all of the many films and franchises they have under their roof.
And lest you're anxious about Blunt doing justice to Julie Andrews, she knows she could never replace the original Mary Poppins.
