Is it too soon to say the Cubs won the Jose Quintana trade?
He certainly impressed his new teammates in his debut.
Quintana said he was "a little nervous in the first inning". "I just want to see him settle in and see him pitch the game he's capable of pitching".
The Cubs (46-45) led 6-0 by the fourth inning, a familiar pattern after they built 8-0 and 7-0 leads Friday and Saturday, respectively. The World Series champs just have not been able to put it all together like they did so easily previous year - and manager Joe Maddon knows it.
"Everybody else saw it; all the other starters saw it, " Maddon said. Kris Bryant is the Cubs' best hitter against fastballs at.294, 77 in Major League Baseball. Willson Contreras added a career-high four hits. In the deal, the Cubs gave up top prospect Eloy Jimenez, top pitching prospect Dylan Cease and a pair of infield prospects in Matt Rose and Bryant Flete.
Quintana has a 1-5 career record with a 4.65 ERA against the Orioles. Baltimore (42-48) has now lost two straight games after the all-star break, dropping further back in the American League wild-card race.
"We are playing a World [Series] champion team that everyone knew was going to get going at some point, and unfortunately they started here", Orioles Manager Buck Showalter said. "Unfortunately, they got started here". Can Quintana be the piece that puts them over the hump? "We were not up to the challenge".
The nerves didn't prevent him from striking out Adam Jones to start the Orioles' first or from retiring the first nine batters he faced.
The Cubs scored 4 runs on hits from Happ, Heyward, and Zobrist. Joseph drove in his second run of the night with a single in the bottom of the ninth, but this time there would be no further rally.
Rizzo hit his 22nd home run in the ninth off Darren O'Day. "I really believe if we play with that kind of internal fire and energy, we are going to win a lot of games in the second half".
Contreras provided a 3-0 lead with a homer into the Cubs' bullpen. Five Los Angeles pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts with no walks. He also banged out 14 homers and drove in 44. First pitch is at 12:35 p.m. CT. Trevor Cahill (4-3) allowed 1 run and 8 hits in 6 2/3 innings for the host Padres.
At Cincinnati, Daniel Murphy hit two of Washington's five home runs and had five RBIs.
A TIGERS 6, BLUE JAYS 5 (11): Miguel Cabrera walked with the bases loaded to give host Detroit a win against Toronto. Warwick Saupold (2-1) got the victory with a scoreless 11th.
Quintana also joined Randy Johnson (1998 Mariners and Astros) as the only pitchers since 1900 to notch 10 or more strikeouts in back-to-back games for different teams. Baltimore is 28-7 in Jimenez's last 35 home starts and 0-5 in their last 5 interleague games while the over is 8-0 in their last 8 interleague home games. In his first five seasons, however, he had a 3.41 ERA and never finished with a mark above 4.00.
Compare Garcia's average of 1.02 home runs per nine innings to Lackey's 2.19. Bud Norris got Tim Beckham to ground into a double play for his 14th save, ending Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak.
