A more familiar face will play Jasmine, as Disney has cast Power Rangers star Naomi Scott for the role.

His casting was officially confirmed at the Disney D23 Expo in California today.

Smith had been rumoured for weeks to be taking the role made famous by Robin Williams in the original 1992 cartoon.

Following an extensive search that saw Ritchie and Disney screen test over 2,000 actors, the studio has landed on Mena Massoud to star in the titular role. And remember how Will Smith was rumored to be playing the Genie?

Dan Lin, who worked with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes, is producing via his Lin Pictures banner, with Jonathan Eirich acting as executive producer.

The news was announced at Disney's popular D23 expo this weekend, and although no other information about Aladdin is now known - it'll start shooting in August - other Disney films were teased today, such as Tim Burton's live-action Dumbo, which is set for March 29, 2019 release.

Massoud is part of the cast of Amazon's Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski, and previously appeared in the TeenNick series Open Heart. He is repped by CAA and Overbrook Entertainment.
