Wildfires are hitting closer to home

Cobb said the fires are not now in the city, however city staff are preparing a communication centre for residents which should be up and running tonight.

Ashcroft resident Ian Douglas said he stood with a couple above the reserve and saw the flames destroy their home.

The Trans Canada Highway is closed off in both directions between Ashcroft and Cache Creek to allow crews to respond to the fire, and Highway 97C is closed in Ashcroft as well.

A separate fire burning about 200 kilometres northwest of Kamloops forced as many as 3,600 people out of their homes.

Lightning strikes in many locations in B.C.'s Cariboo Regional District have started fires in many locations. "Moving now will eliminate that element of panic".

"We have air tankers working on the fire and they are dropping retardant", said MacPherson.

"By acting now we save the issue of smoke and congestion and confusion", said Al Richmond, chairman of the regional district. "So they have enough money to fight the wildfires, but it means that other things don't get done by the agency".

During an evacuation order, registering all family members at a local reception centre tells emergency responders that you are safe.

"After battling more than 2,500 wildfires in Florida this year, Florida Forest Service firefighters are ready to help other states with their fires", said Commissioner Putnam.

A blaze that broke out last night near Ashcroft exploded in size this afternoon, and has now burned property.

If a fire is caused through recklessness or arson, the offender may also be required to pay firefighting costs.

"To those who have lost their homes and to those who are under evacuation order, I want to send my comfort at this hard time".

Fire Information Officer Kevin Skrepnek says it doesn't look like the fire is going to let up anytime soon.
