Dawid Malan had a debut to remember as he hammered a breathtaking 78 to lead England to a 19-run win over South Africa in the third Twenty20 worldwide in Cardiff.

England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan insisted he had done the right thing for the team's "development" by dropping himself for the third Twenty20 worldwide against South Africa at Cardiff on Sunday.

But Morgan, who drew criticism for pulling out of England's tour of Bangladesh in October 2016 because of his fears over terrorism, said the South African series was an opportunity to blood youngsters.

Paterson, who was twice on a hat-trick, led South Africa's attack with four for 32.

AB de Villiers' team went down by 19 runs in the deciding game of the rubber, bringing to six the number of defeats they have suffered in the nine matches they have played in England.

South Africa batsman AB de Villiers will make a decision over his future in global cricket at the end of the summer.

"Dawid Malan just did what he's being doing outside of the team".

"They seem to be going through a good patch and have a lot of talent".

June 26 England's limited overs captain Eoin Morgan has defended missing Sunday's series-deciding Twenty 20 worldwide with South Africa, saying he had wanted to give younger players the chance to get some minutes on the pitch.

Eoin Morgan defended his decision to drop himself from the series-decider against South Africa.

Earlier this month, AB de Villiers issued an apology for South Africa's failure to reach the semi-finals of the just concluded ICC Champions Trophy cricket tournament in England and Wales.

But we've won a few series here in the past, we know how to do it.

England stand-in captain Jos Buttler: "Dawid Malan was fantastic on debut".

No Proteas' bowler was spared punishment: Andile Phehlukwayo and Dane Paterson were despatched for boundaries and the first ball he faced from Imran Tahir was hit straight past the leg-spinner for four.

"I'm not going to pick and choose games, we're going to make a final decision on what's lying ahead for the next couple of years".

The win sets the series up for an exciting finish, with a winner-takes-all finale in Cardiff later dtoday.

"I didn't think (the chance) would ever come but nice to show what I can do".

"It is a fantastic experience to play for your country and to contribute in a win like that on debut is fantastic", he said.

"They fielded pretty well and saved about 10, so there's a 30-run swing there".

"I asked what he did and how he kept motivated when you keep getting overlooked for younger and younger players".
