International Yoga Day kick-off

Similar yoga displays were organised in villages, towns and cities across India and in other countries.

Twenty one participants, including several children, today fell ill due to adverse weather after taking part in the International Yoga Day programme which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here at the Rambai Ambedkar grounds.

"The world will witness a transformation and how all the political parties of different ideologies united for the implementation of the GST", PM Modi said.

"Earlier, Yoga was only restricted to saints and seers in the Himalayan mountains".

He also asserted that attaining "wellness" through yoga was more important than simply being physically fit.

India's Consul General in New York Riva Ganguly Das said holding an worldwide day for yoga was a great way to expand the reach of "Brand India". If 1.25 billion Indians and people around the world can attain this state of well-being, then humankind can also tide over problems born out of human thoughts.

He also explained the importance of Yoga using an analogy of salt. Yoga has become synonymous with India and as such, it contributes to branding of India, Das said. "It is not even expensive to practice", he added.

In his address, Adityanath thanked Modi for enhancing Yoga's reputation globally. A number of Navy officials, along with their families, performed yoga asanas atop INS Viraat, the world's oldest aircraft carrier.

While, a 60-second television commercial to popularize India as the land of yoga has been developed, a month-long TV campaign to create awareness about yoga will be launched on Doordarshan network on Yoga Day on June 21.
