LA honours Adam West with 'Bat-signal' tribute

"We don't gather on these steps very often at night", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told a crowd of thousands that gathered in downtown Los Angeles, many of whom were wearing Batman-related imagery, "but when we do, it is for a solemn and holy objective".

Most fans probably don't realize that West was only the third actor to play the iconic dark knight on television and in movies.

Adam West, the Batman TV series star to get a real life bat-signal. Without the success of the original Batman series, it is hard to imagine where television or superhero content would be today.

West died peacefully Friday in L.A.at age 88 after a short battle with leukemia.

His family were joined at the Los Angeles City Hall tribute by thousands of fans and West's co-stars Burt Ward, who played Robin, and Lee Meriwether, who played Catwoman.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, addressing the "citizens of Gotham", said "legendary" West outshone other Batman actors such as George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck.

"When he wasn't on screen, we knew he was a great man, too", said Garcetti. Let's just hope that Batman vs. Given that this is a city of entertainers, it only makes a little bit more sense that they in turn find a way to give West some further love for everything he meant to the people here and all of his fans. West's relatives are requesting that any donations be made to the Adam West Memorial Fund for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, which supports children with cancer and their families.

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane previously paid tribute to West after his death with a heartfelt Twitter message over the weekend. In his capacity as a voice actor, he often voiced characters loosely or closely based on himself, including Mayor West in over 100 episodes of Family Guy.

Adam West may be gone, but his legacy will live forever.
