Justin Thomas sets US Open record with 9-under 63

Thomas carded a sensational, nine-under 63 at Erin Hills on Saturday to move firmly into contention at the year's second major.

"For one, the greatness of my round is the 63 in the last round of the U.S. Open to win by one", said Miller, now an analyst for the American TV network NBC.

His coolness under pressure should have come as no surprise - and it will be even more vital on Sunday.

US Open leader Brian Harman plays his second shot from the 17th fairway. Thomas admitted that as he walked up the 18th fairway Saturday afternoon, he wasn't aware that he was on the verge of history.

With so many golfing stalwarts banished, Thomas stepped into the breach with a game as flashy as the pink trousers he wore.

"Oh my gosh, Jimmy, be good", Thomas said. His ball landed on the green and only rolled out about 10 feet. -Thomas on the meaning of his record-setting 63.

"The finish was awesome".

"I've been feeding off the fans all week", Stricker said.

But not long after he signed for his record score and an 11-under 205, he began to appreciate the significance of a 63 on this day.

"It means I'm a part of history", Thomas said after his round.

"This week I've been working with my coach, just sitting there and thinking, all right, let's go out and try to make a good golf swing and try to make a good putt. Obviously, today I definitely had something to show for it".

And he still has a long way to go. Harman, who missed the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens, is going for his first major title.

The highlight of a round which included nine birdies and two bogeys was a magnificent eagle-three on the par-five 18th. He got that up-and-down for a bogey and a 68.

Fowler recovered from a blemish at the 13th to birdie his next three holes and reach double figures, while Harman matched Fleetwood's gains at both the 14th and 15th to leave the pair tied on 12 under. He was 10 under.

Third-round disappointment aside, Cink is still looking forward to playing on Sunday. "I'm going to be nervous, but it's a good nervous".

"I think the biggest thing is not getting ahead of yourself".

Fowler is paired with Si Woo Kim (9-under) who's snuck in under the radar with three consistent rounds.

Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard.

Even with the course drying out, there simply was not enough wind to frighten anyone on their game. Add Justin Thomas to the list of golf greats below.

He made the eagle to get his name in the record book Saturday.

"If somebody does it tomorrow [Sunday] to win the U.S. Open by one, that's the specialness of my round".

From that near meltdown, he hit the next wedge to 3 feet and made the putt to save a 6.

"It's going to be weird", Thomas said about the time he has to pass before teeing off on Sunday.

"(The wind is) going to blow and the scores could be a good deal higher tomorrow if the weather comes to what they're predicting", Harman said. "My goal heading into this season was to take everything I was already doing, and just to make it all work a little bit better".
