The long-rumored bout pitting boxing champion Floyd Mayweather vs. mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor became a reality on Wednesday. The fight is now official, we know the weight class (154 lbs), glove size (10 ounces), rounds (12), venue (T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas), and the date (August 26th).

Mayweather said "it's official" on his Instagram account next to a picture of both fighters. It has also intrigued some in boxing, though most dismiss McGregor's chances under boxing rules against one of the greatest defensive fighters in history.

Sports reported today that the betting line for the fight opened with Mayweather a -1000 favorite and McGregor a +650 underdog.

Boxing champion turned promoter De La Hoya said a fight between the two would be an embarrassment for the sport of boxing. The upcoming fight will give him an opportunity to take the record to ideal 50-0, as the bout will be a professional boxing match sanctioned by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

The fight is expected to be a pay-for-view blockbuster, as organizers are hoping it can challenge the 4.6 million pay-per-view buys for Mayweather-Pacquiao.

"I'm not saying that Conor McGregor's gonna win, I'm not saying that Floyd Mayweather's gonna win, but I'm telling you this: The reason Conor McGregor's as big as he is is because he'll fight anybody, anywhere, any time". Mayweather is a boxing technician with a great IQ and is going to make his opponent fight his fight if he wants to pull off the upset. Look me in the eyes, 28 years of age, confident as a m--f--, long, rangy, unsafe with every hand. "The whole world is going to eat their words". "They carry unmatched reputations for spectacle and athleticism, and together they will create a once-in-a-lifetime event". Mayweather is undefeated in boxing at 49-0, having won multiple titles from super featherweight to light middleweight, while McGregor has never boxed professionally.
