Kelly's NBC program, Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly, runs at the same time as 60 Minutes, and Sunday's program went head to head with a re-run of the CBS program.
While Kelly's unveiling on NBC, which included a sit-down interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin, did manage to edge out "60 Minutes" in the demographic important to advertisers, it fell short when it came to total viewers. There was great confusion and blame in between the election campaigning of Trump and Moscow on other side.
Putin compared hackers to artists when asked by reporters in St. Petersburg, Russia about accusations that Russia may interfere in Germany's upcoming elections.
"There is a theory that (President) Kennedy's assassination was arranged by the United States intelligence services so if this theory is correct - and it cannot be ruled out - then what could be easier than using all the technical means of this day and age to organise the attacks and point the finger at Russian Federation".
"If this theory is correct and that can't be ruled out", Putin told Kelly, "then what could be easier, in this day and age, than using all the technical means at the disposal of the intelligence services and using those means to organize some attacks and then pointing the finger at Russian Federation?"
Putin told Kelly that the dinner where the two met was routine.
Why then is Vladimir Putin doing interviews when he can not control the person asking the questions?
Mr Putin again denied any Russian involvement in the USA presidential election and any knowledge of Russian contacts with the Trump campaign. "There were no meetings", he said first.
"This is a transferral, I repeat, of internal political squabbling in the United States onto the worldwide arena", he said.
When Kelly asked why he hasn't asked Kislyak more recently about the alleged meetings, Putin got more irritated. "You created a sensation out of nothing, and. you turned it into a weapon of war against the current president".
As far as the findings of US intelligence agencies, Putin said, "They have been misled". "We will absolutely not accept when these sorts of things are used as an instrument of political conflict".
"There wasn't anything to talk about", Putin said through an interpreter.
The move sparked accusations that Trump dismissed Comey to hinder that investigation and stifle questions about possible collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation. "Do you think we're gathering compromising information on all of them right now or something?" It's just that French journalists asked me about those hackers.
In the end, the interview accomplished what Putin and Kelly needed - she got a big name for her debut episode and he got a forum to push back angrily against American media and intelligence services. "Now she acts all high and mighty", she continued noting she told Axios in an interview that she does not watch TV news and only consumes news by print".
There was no other relation between Putin and Trump rather than a business traveller.
