Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan quits Turkey after shocking reporter bust-up

Speaking to reporters at Turkey's training camp in Slovenia, the Barcelona midfielder said he had made a mistake while representing his country and was ending a career with the national team which saw him win 94 caps and score 17 goals.

Reporters and some photo-journalists left the news conference as Turan arrived, in a show of solidarity with Mese, according to Anadolu.

The 30-year-old is alleged to have had a verbal and physical confrontation with a journalist on a flight following a friendly against Macedonia over reporting that had been done which blamed Turan for creating discord among the squad over bonus money.

And Turan's rant was said to have gone on before the report notes that he had to be restrained by teammates as he grabbed Meşe by the throat.

After the incident on the plane, Arda Turan took to his Instagram and slammed the media for writing lies and slandering.

"Bad things happened last night".

"Do I regret it?"

"I think the time has come".

However, on Tuesday, he revealed that his time with the national team is over.

Turkey captain Arda Turan ended his worldwide career on Tuesday, a day after he came under fire for allegedly assaulting a sports journalist. "I have always said if that's what you want, I will retire". I've never forgotten what it did to us. "My national team career is over", he added.

Mese - a sports journalist since 1973 - has threatened to take legal action against Turan when he returns to Turkey, his newspaper Milliyet said.

"I speak as a man who serve the national team in all categories, loves his country and jersey".
