In July 2015, when portions of Cosby's deposition in the civil lawsuit were ordered released for the first time, the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office re-opened a criminal investigation into the 10-year-old case, prompting the charges.
Cosby's lawyers have signaled they will grill Constand on why she waited almost a year before reporting the alleged assault and why she remained in touch with Cosby for months after their encounter, even taking her mother to see one of his performances.
Bill Cosby has already admitted sexually violating an unconscious woman more than a decade ago, the actor's sexual assault trial has been told.
Celebrity attorney Gloria Allred, who showed up for the first day of the trial, told reporters she's hopeful "there will be justice in this case".
Defense lawyer Brian McMonagle immediately attacked what he said were inconsistencies in Constand's story, disputed that Constand was incapacitated, and made the case that she and Cosby, who was married, had a romantic relationship.
"She said your apology is enough", Cosby later said in a deposition. "If they believe them, he'll be convicted, if there's reasonable doubt about whether they're telling the truth, they won't". She considered him a trusted friend and mentor, called him "Mr. Cosby", and relied on him for career help. Cosby has countered that the encounter was consensual and that he had given her two Benadryl pills to relax.
She had also been alone with him prior to the alleged assault, the attorney said, during a visit to his Foxwoods Resort Casino hotel room in Mashantucket, Connecticut. 'I met a lot of waitresses at the Trident, ' he said. "So many different - "nefarious" is a great word".
Race surfaced as an issue during jury selection, The Washington Post reported. The defense successfully petitioned to have potential jurors chosen from Allegheny County, rather than Montgomery County, in the name of diversity.
Cosby has said he will not testify at the trial.
Cosby is facing a jury of seven men and five women. The Associated Press noted that the jury is 17 percent black, whereas in Allegheny County, the black community is just 13 percent of the total population.
District Judge Steven O'Neill instructed jurors that Cosby is innocent until proved guilty, opening statements are not evidence and Cosby has a right to remain silent. Two even paid others to stand in line for them. "We're past this nonsense about the optics and things".
Cosby's lawyers have questioned why the woman went to the bungalow.
The accuser may face stiff questioning from defense lawyers as to why she took a year to file her complaint with police and why she stayed in touch with the comedian after the alleged assault.
