Police issued an alert to law enforcement for Rodriguez and his vehicle late Friday afternoon. As the officers moved in, Rodriguez opened fire and the officers fired back at him.

The gunman was transported to a Laredo Hospital where he later died, Baeza said. One officer was airlifted 150 miles to the University Hospital in San Antonio, where he remains in critical but stable condition. When backup arrived, those officers also began shooting at the suspect until he went down.

In a press release sent Saturday, Laredo police said they received a call from a restaurant employee shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, saying that her co-worker's boyfriend called the restaurant.

The other three officers received non-life-threatening wounds, according to the source. The three other officers were taken to San Antonio-area hospitals.

Laredo is a city of over 235,000 people located on the border with Mexico.
