Kanter has been an outspoken opponent of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan (Kanter calls him "the Hitler of our century" in the tweet alleging that his father was arrested) and has even been accused of supporting the failed coup against Erdogan.

He also added: "He is potentially to get tortured as thousand others".

A warrant for Kanter's arrest was reportedly issued in Turkey last month, accusing him of "being a member of a terrorist organization".

Turkey issued the arrest warrant for Kanter for communicating on ByLock, an encrypted messaging application Gulen supporters use, Daily Sabah originally reported.

It seemed like a nightmare for the Oklahoma City Thunder's Enes Kanter. He said recently that he has not spoken with his father in nearly two years.

USA -based FETO leader Fetullah Gulen is accused of a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through infiltrating the Turkish state, particularly the military, police, and judiciary, forming the so-called parallel state. He was briefly detained by airport officials in Romania on May 20 after having his passport revoked by the Turkish government. He later was released and went through London before heading to the United States.

During interviews after returning to the U.S., Kanter said his father, a former college professor, had been spit on at the grocery store because of his son.

'Right now, my family can't even go out to eat.

Kanter wants to become an American citizen and can do so after being a permanent resident in the US for five years or three years if he marries a USA citizen. He also said he's going to try to become a USA citizen and that he has a green card. I am open to adoption definitely. I have a green card. "Right now my next move is becoming an American citizen".

In 2016-17, he averaged 14.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game as OKC's primary contributor off the bench.
