But the most problematic aspect of this business pitch is the potential conflict of interest that it poses for Kushner, who now serves as a senior advisor to President Trump.
The Kushner family wants a piece of the huge tide of money that's been flowing out of China.
Under the visa program, entrepreneurs (along with their spouses and unmarried children under 21) are eligible to apply for a green card if they make the necessary investment in a commercial enterprise in the US and plan to create or preserve 10 permanent full-time jobs for qualified USA workers.
The EB-5 program, known as the "golden visa" in China, gives people investing more than $500,000 in a project that creates jobs in the U.S. a path to a green card.
The visa program is especially popular among rich Chinese desperate to move their assets out of their country amid an economic slowdown. An attorney for Jared Kushner said he had sold his stake to a trust benefiting other members of the Kushner family, and would recuse himself from related policy matters while serving as an adviser to Trump. "Their main reason for wanting to immigrate is. for their kids' education". The EB-5 visa program has proven especially popular among wealthy Chinese who see it not only as a ticket toward USA citizenship, but as a way to launder money. Qiaowai says on its website (in Chinese only) that the project is the 87th EB-5 project it has marketed in China, and also its second time working with the Kushners.
The events are jointly organised by Kushner Companies, which Jared Kushner was associated with until he joined the U.S. administration this year, and mainland migration agency - Qiaowai, the report said.
This weekend's presentation highlighted that the One Journal Square project was similar to a "Trump-branded luxury development", also developed by Kushner Companies. But what do you think the Chinese investors took from this particular meeting? After Australia and Canada changed their immigration rules, the US program is one of the cheapest and least restrictive, according to experts.
Something like 90 percent of those putting up half a million dollars for a set of green cards through the EB-5 program are from China.
In the United States, the EB-5 programme has also sparked concerns about possible scams. Only 10,000 people a year are granted one, and the US government has limited the number that can be issued to citizens of a particular country in a single year. Their investments just have to create at least 10 full-time jobs for US workers.
KEITH: And eventually that could lead to a green card and even citizenship. A Washington Post journalist says she was "threatened, harassed, and forced to delete recordings" of the pitch.
A spokesman for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The program has stoked controversy in the U.S.
Though reports from the event said part of her presentation showed a picture of the President and said he had a role in the oft-derided EB-5 visa program, Kushner Cos. said it was not trying to peddle political power as a selling point.
Attendees were reassured by a United States lawyer that despite his tough talk on immigration, Trump was unlikely to make any changes to the EB-5 policy in the near future.
