"I knew Roger Ailes and liked him". The former Fox News chairman suffered from a preexisting condition of hemophilia that prevents blood clotting, which was a major contributor to his death.
DAVID FOLKENFLIK, BYLINE: Good morning, David.
The death of Roger Ailes has raised questions about what impact his passing will have on lawsuits against him and 21st Century Fox.
EARHARDT: He ran four political campaigns.
FOLKENFLIK: He certainly saw it that way.
Even after Ailes' departure last summer, the scandal didn't disappear, with O'Reilly recently ousted by the network.
A former GOP operative to candidates including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and a one-time adviser to President Donald Trump, Ailes displayed a mastery of modern messaging early in his career. He joined Fox in 1996 and helped build it into a massively influential and profitable section of Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.
News doesn't have to be boring, insisted Ailes, who famously captured his view of sensationalism in his "Orchestra Pit Theory". There was nothing there for them. They didn't have to make those decisions, and they really didn't have a plan.
Fox has largely avoided much reporting on Trump's Russian Federation scandal, choosing instead to spend airtime on an alleged link between email leaks to WikiLeaks and the 2016 slaying of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich, a suspicion that authorities say is unfounded. He defined Fox as patriotic, implying that competing journalists didn't care about their country. "May he rest in peace", conservative media watchdog Brent Bozell.
"The sudden passing of Roger Ailes will make it hard for Fox News to refute the allegations against him as his testimony was not secured by sworn testimony to date", New York City lawyer Douglas Wigdor said in a statement emailed to Bloomberg BNA May 18.
And Ailes determined that many viewers like getting their news from attractive blondes in short skirts.
Ailes is universally regarded as a brilliant political strategist.
Fox News has one of the oldest audiences in television and young conservatives are becoming more used to finding their news online. It doesn't matter how much good you do in the world.
Under his leadership, Fox regularly highlighted conspiracy theories throughout President Barack Obama's time in office.
In the meantime, "I don't think they have a clear direction", Ruddy said.
FOLKENFLIK: Fox presented Trump to the Republican electorate as a plausible political figure.
"It's pretty undeniable that without Fox News there wouldn't be a President Trump", Jackson said. It all came to a head as hundreds of us were in Cleveland for the Republican convention.
"Roger Ailes was a patriot", Smith said in closing as he tried without success to hold back the tears. We were not privy to executive actions and while opinions were many, facts were few.
"That was the last we spoke".
GREENE: So we don't know much about the details at this point. Ailes denied all the allegations.
Judd Burstein, a lawyer who represents former host Andrea Tantaros, released a statement saying Ailes' widow and teenage child "did nothing wrong, and surely deserve our sympathy".
