Defender Laurent Koscielny insists Arsenal set out to win the league every year and that missing out on Champions League qualification would be a huge disappointment.
"This season has been tough for us, something went wrong but at the end we still have a chance to go into the Champions League and I'm sure we can improve next season", Fernandinho told British media.
The Gunners must win their final two League matches and hope either Manchester City or Liverpool drop points to ensure Arsenal do not miss out on a top four finish for the first time since Wenger took charge.
But Wijnaldum believes playing in the Champions League would represent the first step to a period of success.
Jurgen Klopp's team, who thrashed West Ham United 4-0 at the London Stadium on Sunday, are unbeaten in their last five away games, winning four of those on the trot.
The gap between 8th and 16th is still incredibly tight with plenty of teams able to leap several places and earn a bigger slice of the prize fund. If we lose or draw we might miss out.
"But we are professional, we are salaried to this club and we just want to have the best result for this club - not to think about other situations or this situation of the boss".
"We can make it easy for ourselves if we play well and score goals. He did an unbelievable job so we need to respect this and his decision at the end of the season".
"Then the last game is at Watford, which will be tough again but we are ready for that".
