Ivanka Trump is serving as an unpaid adviser to her father. The new trademarks are for jewelry, spa services, and bags. From the moment she set foot in the White House, her vaguely-defined but expansive role as the president's "eyes and ears" has created an unprecedented new "advisor" position for the self-styled businesswoman - and with it, unprecedented openings for conflicts of interest.
The higher disapproval rates aren't exactly surprising, considering the recent questions raised by the public around anti-nepotism laws and the Trump family's conflicts of interest. She is also no longer running her design business and has given day-to-day responsibility to Abigail Klem, president of the brand.
Meanwhile, her husband has taken steps to distance himself from his sprawling NY real estate business, divesting some of his business interests including his stake in a major Fifth Avenue skyscraper. These concerns are particularly sharp in China, where the courts and bureaucracy reflect the will of the ruling Communist Party. "For their own sake, and the country's, Ivanka and Jared should consider stepping away from China matters".
And this is not the first time Ivanka's brand has caused concern. Kushner subsequently sold off his investment in the tower.
It's his job to shape trade policy and negotiations with U.S. Exports, but the center for public integrity reports that Ross is keeping his stake in a company called Diamond S Shipping.one of the world's largest operators of tanker vessels that deliver products all over the globe including China, Russia, and in 2014 unloaded in Iran.
Trump announced in January that she would be taking a "formal leave of absence" from the Trump Organization and her Ivanka brand.
The 35-year-old Trump was building her own global business empire before her father ran for president. The video, which was lavishly praised by Chinese state media, played over 2.2 million times on China's popular news portal qq.com. The AP report notes that USA imports of Ivanka Trump merchandise manufactured in Asia increased approximately 40 percent in the first quarter of 2017. USA imports of her merchandise grew an estimated 40 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to Panjiva Inc., which maintains and analyzes global shipping records. On April 18, The Associated Press (AP) reported that Ivanka Trump, a senior White House adviser and daughter of President Donald Trump, had secured valuable merchandising rights in China just hours before sitting with that country's president for dinner at her father's Mar-a-Lago resort. In fact, the AP reports that 2017 has brought Ivanka's company record sales: "U.S. imports, nearly all from China, shot up an estimated 166 percent a year ago".
When asked about her husband, Jared Kushner, 53 percent say it is inappropriate that he is playing a significant role in the White House, compared to 32 percent who think it is appropriate.
Using the prestige of government service to build a brand is not illegal. Host Anderson Cooper followed the report with a discussion with Richard Painter, a former White House counsel and ethics watchdog under President George W. Bush. They also may not receive gifts or honors from foreign leaders.
Trump's lawyer said that she was not involved with the applications. Recusal from other matters, she said, would be decided on a "case-by-case" basis. "If her trademarks are anything but routine they also would be prohibited emoluments from the Chinese government".
Ivanka Trump has 16 registered trademarks in China and more than 30 pending applications, along with at least five marks granted preliminary approval since the inauguration, according to China's Trademark Office database and gazette. China's Trademark Office did not respond to a request for comment.
