'Fate of Furious' speeds to $100M mark over Easter weekend

"Beauty" earned another $13.7 million to bring its five-week domestic take to $454.7 million but, as with "The Fate of the Furious", the Disney fairytale starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens is doing its biggest business overseas.

Vin Diesel in the film "The Fate of the Furious".

Gary Gray became the highest-grossing African-American director of a single film in domestic sales when Straight Outta Compton brought in $161.2 million.

Exhibitor Relations said the latest chapter in Universal Studio's "Fast and Furious" series accounted for almost two-thirds of North American revenues over the three-day Easter weekend, leaving previous frontrunner "The Boss Baby" in its dust with just $15.5 million in sales. Of its total revenue, the film collected $100.2 million in the USA and a $432.2 million in the overseas market.

That total beats the global record held by Disney's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which made $529 million worldwide its opening weekend in 2015. They both make a fortune off the franchise.

The latest "Fate of the Furious" cost $250 million and change to produce, that's a big difference from the "Furious 7" $190 million, and it also a big increase from the first film's $38 million budget. I am exited to see what they will come up with next.

A source familiar with the feud told TMZ that the highly publicized dispute revolved around which actor got better "real estate" in their movie. Right now, China's film regulators are slowly lightening their restrictions, especially that there is an obvious growth in the movie industry in 2016.

Despite it being the eighth film in sixteen years, The Fate of the Furious gave it's fans what they wanted. According to BoxofficeIndia.com, collecting Rs 5 crore on the fifth day, the film earned a total amount of Rs 52.50 crore net. In fact, China is the world's second-largest movie market next to the US. The previous instalment of the car-chase series, Furious 7, debuted in China more than a week after its opening in the US. In the USA, however, it actually saw a decline compared to Furious 7, which grossed $147.2-million.
