Fans of the Mr. Bean actor were shocked on the weekend to hear reports that Atkinson had been killed in a vehicle crash.
Its been compared to the Hangover films - and, like bawdy United States trilogy, also features Mike Tyson in a cameo role.
Bean is hugely popular in Asia, where he's known as "憨豆先生Hān Dòu Xiānshēng", translated as "Mr Foolish Bean".
Top Funny Comedian is expected to be a box office hit. The film also stars Guo Degang 郭德纲, Yue Yunpeng 岳云鹏, Xiao Fei 小斐 and other comedians.
A website Hoax Alert was quickly launched to counter the claims.
The tweet, which quoted the wrong age for Atkinson read: "FOX BREAKING NEWS: Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) died at 58 after vehicle accident".
Fans feared the 62-year-old actor had passed away at the weekend after a Twitter account posing as USA broadcaster Fox News spread the fake news by duping users into clicking on a malicious link.
It added: "The first one is the video player embedded on the site".
Despite getting his age wrong - Atkinson is aged 62 - the tweet has been shared and liked more than 300,000 times.
"It is unclear at this time how much they walked away with but it is probably a substantial sum by now based on the amounts of likes and shares we have been seeing".
Rowan Atkinson's character is seen licking his electronic razor and scaring policemen in a holding cell as dramatic, creepy music plays in the background.
