Rowan Atkinson is set to star in a Chinese-language remake of The Hangover called Top Funny Comedian: The Movie.

Its been compared to the Hangover films - and, like bawdy United States trilogy, also features Mike Tyson in a cameo role.

Top Funny Comedian is expected to be a box office hit. The film also stars Guo Degang 郭德纲, Yue Yunpeng 岳云鹏, Xiao Fei 小斐 and other comedians.

A website Hoax Alert was quickly launched to counter the claims.

The tweet, which quoted the wrong age for Atkinson read: "FOX BREAKING NEWS: Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) died at 58 after vehicle accident".

Fans feared the 62-year-old actor had passed away at the weekend after a Twitter account posing as USA broadcaster Fox News spread the fake news by duping users into clicking on a malicious link.

It added: "The first one is the video player embedded on the site".

Despite getting his age wrong - Atkinson is aged 62 - the tweet has been shared and liked more than 300,000 times.

"It is unclear at this time how much they walked away with but it is probably a substantial sum by now based on the amounts of likes and shares we have been seeing".

Rowan Atkinson's character is seen licking his electronic razor and scaring policemen in a holding cell as dramatic, creepy music plays in the background.
